You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week has launched its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase

Finger Pointing
neka visi Pedro

Today’s phrase of the day neka visi Pedro is a saying used when someone or group is made a scapegoat, or is blamed and made to pay for something even though there are others also involved – a sacrificial lamb, fall guy if you may. The literal translation is –  Let Pedro be Hung – (Pedro being the scapegoat)

Example: “Did you hear Brazil sacked their coach Luiz Felipe Scolari after Croatia beat them 3-0 in the World Cup opener? – “I know, even though the entire team played rubbish and missed 2 penalties someone had to go – neka visi Pedro
