Croatian Youth Leaving in Droves

Around 30,000 mainly young, highly educated Croats have left Croatia’s shores for Canada and America in the last year in the search for a brighter future. The numbers of those who want to join them is also growing, reports Croatian radiotelevision.

Ivan Radic, who has spent the last two years giving people advice on how to relocate to Canada and find work there, has decided himself to pack up and head for Canada. Radic says that a city the size of Zagreb in Canada has around 4,600 job advertisements compared to Zagreb’s 500-odd.

The majority of those heading abroad site the lack of employment opportunities as the main reason. From 1991 to 2006, around 150,000 Croats left for Australia, Canada and America.
