Croatia To Apply For Euro 2020 Hosting Rights

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has confirmed today that it will put its name in the hat to be a host nation of matches at the EURO 2020, after UEFA’s Executive Committee today in Nyon, Switzerland, made a decision that the tournament will be staged in 13 cities across Europe.

12 nations will be selected to host each 3 group matches and one-quarter final match, whilst one nation will host the semi-finals and final. UEFA have stated that host nations of group phase matches must have a stadium capacity of 50,000, which may cause Croatia some problems.

HNS secretary Damir Vrbanovic confirmed that Croatia will be a candidate to be a host nation, but it will depend on their financial situation. “Building a new stadium with all the supporting facilities will cost around 150 million euros,” said Vrbanovic, adding that help would have to come from somewhere.

UEFA will accept bids early next year and will announce the host cities in September 2014.
