Christmas Recipe: Kuhano Vino – Mulled Wine

A winter Christmas is not the same without knocking a few glasses of mulled wine, or kuhano vino, back during the festive period.

One thing you will find at most Advent stands across Croatia is a variety of kuhano vino to go with the sausages and fritule. Although kuhano vino is usually traditionally made with red wine, white wine options are available too.

Here is a simple but tasty recipe to whip up at home to get into the Christmas mood.

Ingredients

Red wine – 750 ml
Orange juice (freshly squeezed) – 100 ml
Sugar – 150 g
Star anise – 1
Nutmeg – 1 teaspoon
Cloves – 5
Cinnamon – 1 stick
Lemon – 1 (peel)
Orange – 1 (peel)

Instructions

In a pot put in sugar, star anise, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, juice and orange and lemon peel.

Pour just enough of the wine to cover the ingredients and cook on medium temperature for 5-6 minutes until mixture thickens.

Now add the rest of the wine and simmer for another 5 minutes. Remove all the ingredients and pour into a cup. Serve with orange peel or slice inside (optional)
