The 24th Zagreb Marathon was held over the past weekend in the Croatian capital, and while Ethiopian Gadisa Shumie may have won the event in a time of 2:13:10, the real star of the marathon was a 60-year-old French diplomat…

60-year-old Sidy Diallo attracted the most attention our of the 2,000 runners on Sunday as he completed the 42 km course barefoot! If it was not hard enough, he also ran the race in an outfit not often seen on the marathon circuit.

Diallo, who is based in France, is no stranger to marathons, the Zagreb Marathon was his 125th in the last 5 years.

“This green outfit I actually prepared for the race in Dublin in 2 weeks. In Warsaw I ran the last 12 kilometres barefoot and in Zagreb I planned to take my shoes off for the last 30 kilometres, but then I realised that today was exactly 5 years since my first marathon so I decided to run a complete marathon barefoot for the first time,” he said.

Diallo, who says that he runs for fun on the weekends, finished 12 marathons in 2012 and 48 marathons in 2013 in all 7 continents.
