487,612 Croats Sign Petition Against Motorway Concession

Croatia487,612 Croatian citizens have signed a petition in support of keeping the nations motorways in Croatian hands…

The government last year announced that the motorways would be offered up for a 30-50 year concession due to the large debt the state-owned company operating them were in. The proposed tender, which would include the sections; Bregana – Zagreb – Lipovac, Zagreb – Split – Ravca, Zagreb – Rijeka, and Zagreb – Gorican, would go for between 2.5 and 3 billion euros.

A referendum initiative ‘We are not giving away our motorways’ was launched to block the move with 450,000 signatures required by law to force a referendum. Preliminary results in today show that the group have gathered nearly 40,000 more than required. The group want the referendum held on the same day as the presidential elections in January 2015.
