If Qatar do not lose the hosting rights to the 2022 FIFA World Cup as some predict following the arrest of a number of FIFA officials for corruption, then some matches in the tournament may be played at Split’s Poljud stadium – well, a replica of it at least…

Zagreb architect Otto Barić, who designed the new handball arena in Doha for the recent World Handball Championships which were recently held there, has won another project in Qatar, this time to design a stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Barić has come up with his concept for the stadium which was inspired by Hajduk Split’s Poljud stadium in Croatia. Barić has even named the project ‘Poljud 2022’.

“I was on the plane flying in the air playing around with some sketches when suddenly Magaš’s Poljud stadium came to my head. Inspired, till the end of the flight I sketched the stadium in the shape of a shell,” explained Barić to Jutarnji list.

For now the question remains – will Qatar still be hosts come 2022?
